Sinharaja rain forest occupies 118,425 acres in the wet zone of Sri Lanka. Sinharaja is declared as a biosphere reserve in 1978 owing to its significance for the world. It is also declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988 and Sinharaja is the first natural world heritage site on the island. This lowland evergreen rain forest is steeped in deep legend and mystery. Sinharaja rain forest is shared by 3 provinces in Sri Lanka namely southern province, western province and Sabaragamuwa province.
