[Itinerary]

Soon after you touchdown in Sri Lanka, an NKAR representative will welcome you at the airport. Here’s to an exciting tour ahead, and your first destination is Negombo – a key fishing town on the Western Coast of Sri Lanka. After a 30 mins drive, you will arrive at your hotel to check-in and then proceed for a mouth-watering dinner by the beach. After the delectable dinner, enjoy a relaxing stay at a cozy hotel in Negombo.

After breakfast, you will be leaving for an exciting boat ride through the Negombo lagoon weaving through the mangroves and visit an exciting coastal destination called ‘Lellama’. You can delight in the glorious sunrise, spectacular view of thousands of colourful fishing boats, the buzzing fishing communities, the iconic fish market that sells an extensive variety of fresh fish caught for that day and also try your luck in fishing! Thereafter, you will proceed to Habrana, en-route stopping to visit the famous ‘Aukana buddha statue’.

En-route to Habarana you will see the urban and sub-urban living styles, sprawling grasslands, varied vegetation, roadside boutiques and rustic country life. You will then visit the Awkana statue – a masterpiece of a massive standing Buddha statue, where you will learn the history behind its creation. Several legends are linked with the origins of this statue and the ‘Raswehera Buddha statue’, the two standing colossal buddha statues. One of the stories says that the two statues were created as the result of a competition between a master sculptor and his pupil. Finally, you will conclude your day by checking into your hotel in Habarana for dinner followed by an overnight stay.

Kickstart your day with breakfast before you begin on the Polonnaruwa Medieval City Tour, exploring the historic city and the second capital of Sri Lanka dating back to the 11th & 12th centuries AD. At this World Heritage Site, you will witness the ruins of the Royal Palace, statues of King Parakramabahu, the spanning Parakrama Samudraya and much more. After immersing yourself in the historical past of Sri Lanka, you will engage in a village culinary tour to experience the authentic Sri Lankan cuisine.

You will engage in preparing your village lunch together with village folks, where you will also meet and interact with the village families as they share their lifestyles and stories with you so that you can feel the pulse of the rural people and the village life of Sri Lanka. You will also learn how fresh ingredients are sourced from the surroundings and see how lunch is cooked using firewood. After relishing the freshly cooked Sri Lankan style lunch (traditional rice, lentils, fresh vegetables, fried fish and more) served on a lotus leaf, you will bid farewell to the villagers and proceed to the Minneriya National Park for an exciting afternoon jeep safari in the wilderness.

The Minneriya national park situated 182 km away from Colombo in the North Central Plains of Sri Lanka, is home to a variety of fauna and flora. At the massive Minneriya Rainwater Reservoir, (the highlight of the park) you will witness the most awaited elephant gathering. This is a thrilling sight and experience, plus a memory to cherish for the rest of your life. The park is home to 24 species of mammals, over 170 bird species, and 25 species of reptiles out of which 8 are endemic to Sri Lanka. After an exhilarating 3-hour safari in the wilds, you will drive to your hotel in Habarana, to check-in for dinner and an overnight stay.

Your day starts early today, with the climb to the country’s most famous and iconic rock fortress – Sigiriya. Recognized from miles away, the soaring ‘Lion Rock’ is an archeological wonder and a testament of Sri Lanka’s city planning, water gardens, engineering and fortification in the 5th century AD. The rock peak is home to an incredible blue-green landscape with lush green gardens and advanced irrigation systems. Declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO, you will be thrilled to see the beautiful frescoes and the fascinating mirror wall of the rock fortress. It is undoubtedly the most treasured historical monument in Sri Lanka. Once you climb down the rock fortress, you can enjoy your breakfast packet under a nice shady grove. After absorbing the majestic view, you will proceed to the ‘Hill Capital’ – Kandy, via Mahiyanganaya.

On the way to Kandy, you will visit the Moragahakanda Dam and the Mahiyanganaya Temple. The Moragahakanda Dam is a high gravity dam with a height of 65 meters and is created with an active storage capacity of 521,000,000 cubic meters, and is four times bigger than the gigantic Parakrama Samudraya in Polonnaruwa. The dam is also used for irrigation, water supply, inland fishing and power generation. The Mahiyanganaya temple was the first stupa built in Sri Lanka during the era of Lord Buddha with a relic enshrined in the temple.

During this journey, you will be travelling on the winding roads along the towering mountains passing lush grasslands bursting into bloom, Lankan damsels selling king coconuts by the sideway, see mist-covered landscapes, windy brown streets and an abundance of greenery.

Today you will embark on a city tour in Kandy (after breakfast) to visit The Sacred Tooth Relic temple – Kandy‘s key attraction and symbol of sovereignty enshrined in great splendour. The Esala Perahera held in August each year is a must-see, and this spectacular pageant honours the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. After visiting the tooth relic temple, you will drive around the iconic Kandy lake admiring the serene and stunning landscape merged with the beauty of nature.

Next, you will visit the famous Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, a magnificent 57-hectare garden that treasures the best of tropical flora, aromatic spices and rare medicinal herbs. Delight in a lunch under the shady orchards while engrossing in the beauty of nature before engaging in the Kandy City Tour and shopping. During this tour, you will see the key highlights of the hill capital and shop to your heart’s content.

In the evening you will witness a colourful cultural show with an exciting agenda of traditional Sri Lankan dances and pageantry. You will be captivated by the vibrant event filled with colourful costumes, graceful dances and oriental music, making it an unforgettable experience. After dinner, you can unwind into the night at a local pub, where you will get the perfect opportunity to mingle with the locals and see and experience the local nightlife and happenings first hand. You will party your way into the night to the lively reggae played at the pub, followed by a dinner with a balcony view of the city and an overnight stay in Kandy.

You will begin your day with breakfast, before leaving for the Kandy railway station. You will take an epic train ride to Nanu Oya (subject to availability) which is a breathtakingly scenic 3-4 hour train trip. The train journey weaving through the scenic hill country is one of the most beautiful explorations in Sri Lanka. From the edge of soaring mountains, you will oversee the branching valleys from the mist capped mountains, sloping lush green tea plantations, villages dotted with houses, thick forests and whooshing waterfalls. Continue the drive till Nuwara Eliya and once you reach the city, you will check into hotel and relax till evening.

Nuwara Eliya is a city in the hill country and is one of the most important locations for tea cultivation and is well known for its chilly climate and for being the coolest area in the tropical island. The city still preserves its ancient charm with its well-maintained colonial buildings and private homes with English-style lawns and blooming gardens.

In the evening, after enjoying the breezy walk via the Nuwara Eliya City and around the famous Gregory lake, relish in a local cocktail prepared whilst admiring the lovely landscape of colonial buildings with blooming gardens. You will enjoy an authentic experience of making your cocktail by following the instructions given by professional mixologists. You will then have dinner followed by a comfortable overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.

After breakfast, you will begin your journey to Colombo. En-route you will visit Devon Falls and St.Clair’s falls. Devon Falls also known as the ‘Veil of the valley’, is one of the most beautiful cascades of Sri Lanka located close to the Talawakelle town. It is named after a pioneer English coffee planter called Devon, whose plantation was close by to the waterfall. St.Clair’s falls is one of the widest falls in the country and is commonly known as the ‘Little Niagra of Sri Lanka’. These waterfalls are a striking sight to see and do not forget to capture as many pictures you can.

Optional : You can engage in white water rafting in Kitulgala on the way to Colombo. For all adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts, this is the most sort after destination in Sri Lanka for white water rafting, bird watching, boating, trekking and hiking. You can enjoy a thrilling experience over the turbulent waters and take back home an unforgettable memory for a lifetime!

You will continue to drive to Colombo, and once you reach the city you will visit the beautifully landscaped ‘Diyatha Uyana Park’ to spend the evening, followed by a delicious dinner at the iconic Water’s Edge Hotel. After dinner, you will check in and enjoy a comfortable stay in a hotel in Colombo.

Today is your last day on the paradise isle. Indulge in a lavish spread of breakfast before proceeding to the airport for departure. This brings you to the end of an exciting, fun-filled and memorable adventure in Sri Lanka!
